How to root Android Marshmallow, Lollipop and older versions of Android
The first requirement for this activity is to have your phone rooted. Below is a guide to accomplish the same:

Backup
The most important step is to backup your phone so that you do not lose any important data. You can backup your Android phone/device via multiple ways such as using Google’s own tools or any other third-party apps.
APK or custom ROM:
Next up is the requirement to choose an APK (Android application package) or custom ROM (alternate version of Android). You can even create your own version as Android is open-source. To brief, an APK is used to distribute and install software on your device. It’s like the .exec files for your Windows. Some rooting programs are Towelroot and Kingo Root. You will need to run a check on whether either of them is compatible with your phone/device.
Rooting:
Depending on the APK or custom ROM that you installed, the rooting process will vary. You can find in-depth information and instructions on rooting specific phone models from websites such as XDA Developers Forum and the AndroidForums. We will just provide an overview of the same as the basics remain same almost always.

Now, let’s explore the different methods that can be used to change boot animation on your phone/device.
First Method – Android File Manager (Manual)
This is the hard way that we talked about. To utilize this method, you will need a file manager app, and that too with ‘Root’ access. For this tutorial, we will be using the ‘Root Browser’ app. Follow the steps mentioned below diligently:
- Download the custom boot animation that you wish to use on your phone/device. Next, download the associated bootanimation.zip file. You can download custom boot animations from here.

- Open the Root Browser (or the concerned file manager) app. Get inside the app, locate the original boot animation file (bootanimation.zip) in /system/media path.
- Long-press the original boot animation file, choose Rename and change its name to bootanimation.zip1.
- Now, browse the custom boot animation that you downloaded earlier and that you wish to use as the new custom boot animation, copy the zip file to /system/media path. Long-press and then choose Permission.
- For setting permissions, refer to the diagram provided below. Once you have set the exact permissions as shown below, press OK. After that, rename the file to bootanimation.zip, in case the zip file name is different.
| Read | Write | Execute |
| Owner | ✓ | ✓ |
| Group | ✓ | |
| Others | ✓ |
- You will have to make sure that the filename is correct (bootanimation.zip) for the system to recognize your custom boot animation as the original.
- Are you able to see two zip files? One named bootanimation.zip (new file) and the other is bootanimation.zip1 (original)? If yes, then you are on the right track.
- Let’s say you wish to switch back to the original boot animation then you just need to delete the current bootanimation.zip and rename the original file back to bootanimation.zip (from bootanimation.zip1). Easy peasy, huh?
- The last step consists of rebooting the device and you are all set to witness your new custom boot animation.
Second Method – Through Boot Animations (Root) App
- Similar to the first step in the First Method, you will need to download the custom boot animation as per our requirement.
- You can download the Boot animations root app from here:

- Next, open the app and choose the Backup/Restore option from the multiple menu options provided. You will need to backup your original boot animation by tapping on the Backup option. You can restore the original boot animation with the Restore option.
- Locate custom boot animation file that you wish to include (‘bootanimation.zip’). Long-press the zip file and click on the Install option.
Note: File names such as ‘Running-Dog-animation.zip’ or any similar file names should be renamed to ‘bootanimation.zip’ before installing it.
- After the installation is completed, reboot your phone/device to witness the new custom boot animation on your phone/device.
You have successfully customized the boot animation on your phone/device.
Remember that your phone is rooted. You have complete control over your phone/device so be careful to not disturb the settings. You will be able to access apps that are only meant a for rooted mode. These apps include ad-blockers and robust security and backup utilities. Hence, be sure to not tamper with any of these apps that can ruin the smooth functioning of your phone/device. Risks are minimal but include voiding the device’s warranty, losing access to certain apps (such as Google Wallet) or destroying the phone altogether, which is kind of rare.
